Sculpting tools

A few different sculpting tools or a small kit will be more than enough for any doll artist! Make sure you have a few pointy, flat and bent tools for the best results. Also, you can get a little bit creative and use something you can find in your house. For example, I use a short blunt knife to smooth out large areas!

Metal sculpting tool kit

These are my absolute favourite! I like that for not that big of a price you can get a lot of different tools. They are really good for detailing and sculpt difficult areas like nose or lips. The tool that I have in hand gets the most use from the whole kit. Pointy tip reaches all the crevices and the bent side is perfect for sculpting lips and eyes!

Rubber sculpting tools

Usually, rubber sculpting tools are used with polymer clay. But they work wonderfully with air-dry clays as well. I use rubber sculpting tools for detailing and very delicate areas like eyes, nose or lips depending on the doll.

Brushes

This might seem strange but thin watercolour brushes are amazing for smoothing out clay. When I sculpt hands, to smooth out the fingers I only use these brushes because metal tools are too harsh for such detailed work. To make this work, use a damp brush and make sure your clay is not too dry!
